What is Excessive Sweating?
Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, can be an embarrassing condition for those that suffer from it. It has the ability to impact one’s quality of life by interfering with work productivity, social activities and wardrobe choices.
For many sufferers hyperhidrosis takes a toll on emotional wellbeing, undermining confidence or leading to depression. Any part of the body can be affected, but the most common areas are those with a high concentration of sweat glands such as the armpits, hands, feet, groin and face.
Who is Affected?
Over 900,000 Canadians(1) suffer from hyperhidrosis. Women aged 21 to 35 seem to struggle with excessive sweating the most.(2)
The condition affects so many people that one in three Canadians(2) will:
- Carry deodorant around to apply throughout the day
- Alter their wardrobe due to sweating
For more severe cases, one in 10 Canadians(2) will:
- Avoid shaking hands
- Bring a change of clothes to work
Unfortunately many sufferers are so ashamed of their condition, they won’t discuss it or seek help—in fact only 38% of hyperhidrosis sufferers talk to a health care professional about their condition(1). As a result, most are not aware that there’s a prescription treatment for excessive sweating in Vancouver.
BOTOX® Injections for Hyperhidrosis
There are several treatment options available depending on the severity of the sweating and where it occurs. A consultation with your doctor will determine the best treatment option for you.
A localized BOTOX® injection to the affected area has been proven to be an effective treatment providing an 83% reduction in sweating(2) . BOTOX® treatment for hyperhidrosis works by temporarily blocking the secretion of chemical transmitters at the level of the sweat gland thereby “turning off” the body’s sweat glands.
While topical solutions only work on a short-term basis, BOTOX® injections offer relief from hyperhidrosis for up to an average of seven months. It is also the only prescription medicine approved by Health Canada for the treatment of underarm hyperhidrosis.
