Tattoos have become part of mainstream culture – it is estimated that 20% of North Americans have body art of some sort, and of these 1 in 4 people regret getting them.

Whether you have grown tired of your design, want to remove it or are looking to fade and cover an existing tattoo with a new design, you’re not alone and we are here to help you reach your goals. Our team of highly trained dermatologists and laser technicians, along with state-of-the art equipment, can work with you to safely and effectively eliminate body ink. Specific treatment plans will be determined by the size of the tattoo, the type and colour of ink, and how well you respond to the treatments.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

Pacific Dermaesthetics in Vancouver utilizes safe and effective laser tattoo removal techniques.  We have been helping patients get rid of tattoos with minimal discomfort for many years.

Lasers are the safest and most effective way to remove tattoos. Since different lasers and wavelengths of light are more effective on certain ink colours, our clinic has two different technologies available for laser tattoo removal:

  1. PicoSure laser
  2. Medlite C6 laser

PicoSure

This highly advanced laser uses a pressure-wave technology, which is the fastest method available on the market today. It has the ability to fracture ink pigment into tiny particles, which are more easily removed by the body. The PicoSure is particularly effective with green and blue inks.

Medlite C6

This Q-Switched laser’s energy is delivered in nanosecond bursts (billionths of a second), making it very effective at breaking up tattoo ink. In slower lasers (millionths of a second), energy can create heat in the surrounding tissue, burning or scarring the tissue. Some of the black ink can also become trapped in the tissue leaving lasting marks. The Medlite delivers photo-thermal energy into the skin to heat up and break apart ink pigment.

Think of your tattoo ink as big stones of colour under your skin. These ink ‘stones’ are too big for the body to remove on its own. But the laser’s pulse of energy breaks up these stones, shattering them into fragments small enough for the body to surround and cart away.

The PicoSure’s ultra-short light pulses shatter the stones into even tinier fragments, making it the better choice for faster tattoo removal.

Is Painless Tattoo Removal Possible?

The skin around the tattoo will be frozen with a local injection prior to the procedure in order to minimize discomfort. Clients may also take Tylenol an hour before treatment to make the tattoo removal more comfortable.

Laser Tattoo Removal Results

Some tattoos will never be completely eliminated because of certain factors. The success of laser tattoo removal depends on:

  • Tattoo size
  • Ink colour
  • Depth of ink in the skin
  • Age of the tattoo
  • Skin colour
  • Tattoo artist’s skill level (professional vs amateur)

If there is already an existing ridged scar on the skin from the tattoo process, that scar will remain after the ink has been eliminated. The Pacific Dermaesthetics team has many years of experience in laser tattoo removal in Vancouver, working with advanced medical-grade lasers on a daily basis.

What to Expect

As noted above, an anesthetic and Tylenol can be taken prior to treatment to lessen any discomfort. A short, sharp staccato of energy pulses will be felt as the clinician moves over the tattoo.

Most treatments only take minutes, but multiple sessions are required at a minimum of six to eight week intervals to allow for complete pigment residue absorption by the body (in other words, your body needs time to ‘remove’ the broken up ink and this when the tattoo starts to fade).

The number of laser tattoo removal sessions needed usually varies from at least 4 to around 15 treatments depending on the depth and concentration of the tattoo ink. After each session, most tattoo inks will fade gradually over a period of approximately six to eight weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments does it take to remove a tattoo?

The number of laser tattoo removal sessions needed usually varies from at least 4 to around 15 treatments depending on the depth and concentration of the tattoo ink. After each session, most tattoo inks will fade gradually over a period of approximately six to eight weeks.

Will the tattoo be removed completely?

Not all tattoos can be completely cleared, it depends on several factors including the quality of the tattoo, depth of ink and the colours used. Some residual ink, particularly the colour yellow, may be left in the skin.

What about the different ink colours in some tattoos?

The Medlite C6 has multiple wavelengths available to treat a variety of colours. However, some colours may not be removed entirely, such as yellow. With the addition of the Picosure Laser in our clinic we are now able to remove blues and greens which used to be considered the most difficult colours to remove.
