Botox for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) By Dr. Diana Diao

Embarrassed to high-five a friend in public or raise a hand during a work meeting?

Those dreaded armpit sweat stains can impact both work and play. Although sweating is our body’s way of cooling down, excessive sweating is just not cool (pun intended). Hyperhidrosis,or excessive sweating, can happen regardless of the temperature and is embarrassing and disruptive to daily life for many people. Hyperhidrosis affects about one million Canadians, but it’s something you don’t have to live with if you are one of them. Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis is often life changing for our patients when topical options such as antiperspirants fail to provide adequate relief. It is one of our favorite procedures to perform at Pacific Derm, and is a safe and simple way to effectively decrease sweating around 6 or more months.

How does Botox work to decrease sweat?

Botox decreases sweating by locally interfering with the messages our nerves send to sweat glands under the skin.

Am I a candidate for Botox hyperhidrosis treatment?

If topical therapies have been tried without success and there are no underlying medical conditions causing the sweating, then book an appointment with us to discuss how to take control of your sweating with Botox treatment. People should see their doctor first to exclude other possible causes for excessive sweating before embarking on Botox treatment. Some of these causes include thyroid disease and certain medications. People with myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, or Lou-Gehrig’s disease should not receive this treatment without consulting their neurologist first.

What to expect on the day of your treatment.

The total time required for the treatment is between 10 to 30 minutes. There is minimal discomfort when treating the armpit regions.

Downtime and recovery.

No downtime involved! Results can be expected in one to two weeks, and last around 6 months.
