Brighten up: Beauty brands embrace the light side of skin care

Skin BrighteningVancouver, May 23, 2016 – The current popularity of skin brightening products in Canada can be traced to a long history of people yearning to be free of blemishes, dark spots and wrinkles.

Dr. Jason K. Rivers spoke on the interest of these products: “(Brightening) products are extremely popular, especially among the Asian population. I see a few people each day who present with it as their main issue.

Dr. Rivers, who in addition to being a Vancouver dermatologist is also a clinical professor at the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science at UBC, continued in describing the ban on advertising products as lightening or whitening, unless it is a colour-pigmented product such as concealer: “For the cosmetic market, there are restrictions on what can be said and what claims can be made. Some products sold contain illegal and high concentrations of ingredients that are often brought in from other countries or sold through the Internet. Some of these include very high concentrations of hydroquinone or mercury.”
