How to Manage Oily and Acne-Prone Skin in Summer

By Pacific Derm on August 20 2015

If you have oily, problematic or acne-prone skin, you know that the hot weather produces additional skin care challenges. Some skin reacts by producing more oil from sebaceous glands, which in turn leads to breakouts.

No matter what you do, do not over do it: with extra oil and perspiration, there is a tendency to want to wash your skin too often, layer on too many products, or use products that are too harsh for your skin. The end result is red, irritated skin or even more breakouts.

The key is to use the right products for your skin condition. Here’s a list of products that our clinic recommends for problematic skin:

Riversol Sensitive Skin Calming TrioReversal Sensitive Skin Trio

Riversol Tplus has developed two lines to work for problematic and redness-prone skin: one is formulated for normal to oily skin; the other is for dry skin.

The Riversol Trio forms an easy three-step skin care regimen to clear and calm skin:

  1. Cleanser – Gently removes impurities while keeping the skin’s pH balance intact; has antibacterial and antifungal properties
  2. Protective serum – Calms and nourishes the skin; reduces redness and imperfections
  3. Moisturizer – Protects skin from effects of inflammation and external damage; absorbs quickly without leaving residue or clogging pores. Oily skin version is a lighter lotion, while the dry skin version is a moisturizing cream.

Each product can be purchased separately, but the three products used together provide better results and better value.

SkinCeuticalsSkinCeuticals-Blemish + Age

There are several products from SkinCeuticals that we can recommend particularly for adult acne-prone skin:

  1. Blemish + Age Cleansing Gel – Contains cleansing properties combined with LHA, glycolic acid and salicylic acid to decongest pores, smooth irregularities and reduce breakouts
  2. Blemish + Age Solution – A decongesting toner to help exfoliate, decongest pores and improve skin tone.
  3. Blemish + Age Defense – An oil-free serum that fights formation of acne, minimizes blemishes and reduces the appearance of signs of aging.
  4. Clarifying Clay Masque – A weekly purifying treatment to decongest pores and remove excess oil; contains aloe and chamomile to soothe the skin.
  5. Retinol 0.5 and 1.0 – A refining night cream to reduce appearance of blemishes, blotchiness, fine lines and age spots.

SkinMedica GlyPro Systemskinmedica-glypro_system

The GlyPro System from SkinMedica features Glycolic Acid (and other active ingredients) to revitalize the skin’s textural surface and tone, but is gentle enough for sensitive and post-procedure skin. It includes:

  1. GlyPro Facial Cleanser – Eliminates causes of clogged pores and acne by removing surface skin cells to reveal softer, rejuvenated skin.
  2. GlyPro Antioxidant Serum – Acts as an exfoliant; combined with antioxidants and aloe vera, it protect and soothes skin. The 15% glycolic acid compound also diminishes signs of aging such as spots and fine lines.
  3. GlyPro Renewal Cream – Encourages skin renewal and softness.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Sunscreen

Don’t forget the sunscreen – and again, one suited for your skin type. We like Colorescience Sunforgettable mineral sunscreen because it provides broad spectrum sun protection with oil-absorbing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The powder gives you sheer, light foundation coverage with the bonus of a SPF 30 or 50. It is non-irritating, weightless and natural coverage that helps improve the look of the skin.
