BOTOX® Injections for Migraines
If you suffer from migraine headaches, you know how daunting some of the symptoms can be. The pain can be debilitating and acutely affect your work, social and personal commitments. Some sufferers experience anxiety, depression and sleep disorders associated with these severe headaches.
Traditionally migraines have been treated using oral medications, but now more preventative migraine treatments are available such as BOTOX® injections for Migraines.
What are Migraines?
A migraine is a headache that causes severe pain for an extended period of time. Often a migraine is accompanied by nausea, vomiting and environmental sensitivities. Migraines tend to affect more women than men.
Chronic migraine sufferers experience this pain at least fifteen days out of every month, lasting at least four hours per day. These migraines can last for several days at a time, and sometimes cause you to be bed ridden. There are many common triggers such as stress and lack of sleep, but the exact cause of migraines remains largely unknown.
The first step towards migraine relief is to identify your migraine triggers. Once you are aware of these, closely managing the triggers can reduce the impact migraines have on your life.
BOTOX®injections for chronic migraines when expertly applied, work to prevent or reduce the intensity and/or frequency of migraines. Clinical studies have shown BOTOX® injections to be effective in the prevention of chronic migraines, with 70% of patients experiencing more than a 50% reduction in “migraine days”(1). With long-term use, migraine severity and duration may also be reduced.
Approved by Health Canada in 2011 as a preventative treatment for adults, BOTOX® for migraines is also approved in the US by the FDA and by UK drug regulators.
BOTOX® injections, best known as the popular wrinkle treatment, has been used in therapeutic medicine for over twenty years. First used in the treatment for crossed eyes and uncontrollable blinking, BOTOX® injections are now recognized by global regulatory and healthcare authorities as an effective treatment for 21 different indications, including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
What to Expect
After an examination and discussion with one of our doctors to ensure this is an appropriate treatment for your needs, several injections will be made in specific sites around the head and neck. There may be a slight discomfort at the injection site, otherwise no downtime is experienced. To be effective, BOTOX® injections for migraines should be repeated every three months.
