Skin Cancer Screening
If you have many moles on your face and body, and have a history of excessive sun exposure, you should know the importance of regularly examining your moles for signs of change. We have the first system in Canada for total body mole mapping—a great skin cancer screening tool if you are at risk for melanoma and other skin cancers.
What is Mole Mapping?
Mole mapping is a skin surveillance technique that utilizes imaging to catalogue all the moles on your face and body. Once the initial mapping is complete and stored in the computer, follow-up visits allow the system to compare images and flag any changes in your moles.
Our Vancouver clinic uses a computer-controlled digital imaging and archiving system called FotoFinder, which is more advanced than regular digital photography. We have the ability to take microscopic pictures with a specialized camera, and then the expert software helps our dermatologists detect any changes in lesions.
A pose gallery ensures all surface areas of the body are photographed. When completed, an exact mole catalogue is stored on electronic media and provides a panoramic view of your body. This helps us to localize every mole and facilitates an accurate comparison of earlier images to the most recent ones taken. All camera settings are done by the computer and are automatically adjusted for the follow-up images. This guarantees quality control over the whole imaging process.
A computer-aided comparison of baseline (your first session) and follow-up photos is the most reliable way to detect new moles. Diagnostic accuracy can be significantly increased as even the slightest changes in mole structure are visualized.
What to Expect
The mole mapping procedure is quick: the visit and total body mapping only requires 30 minutes. Photos are taken in a private room and then photos stored securely in digital format and used at subsequent visits.
Your skin will be reviewed by one of our physicians at 6-month to one year intervals to determine if there has been any changes to your moles.
Besides using sun protection, early detection is one of the best ways to prevent melanoma and other skin cancers from becoming serious issues. Please contact our clinic to make a mole mapping appointment.
