What to Expect Before and After Thermage Skin Tightening? by Pacific Derm

By Kat Hirsch on October 25 2023

As we age, our bodies undergo a natural transformation, and this includes the skin, our body’s largest organ.

Over time, our skin adapts to this evolving rhythm, often manifesting as fine lines and wrinkles. This happens as our innate collagen production gradually diminishes or becomes compromised, resulting in looser skin.

As we fully embrace the natural process of aging as a positive evolution, we also highly value the importance of maintaining our best appearance and well-being throughout this journey. This not only boosts self-confidence but also plays a pivotal role in enhancing mental health and overall life satisfaction.

It’s also worth noting that skin laxity can be associated with various other conditions, including significant weight loss.

At Pacific Derm, located in Vancouver, British Columbia, we have discovered that Thermage skin tightening treatment is both a safe and effective solution for skin tightening. Beyond its remarkable skin-tightening benefits, Thermage has proven invaluable in addressing concerns like reducing textural irregularities.

In this blog post, we’ll explore what to anticipate both before and after Thermage.

What is Thermage?

Thermage is a non-invasive radiofrequency therapy that applies heat to the deeper skin layers in order to stimulate collagen growth for a more youthful and refreshed look.

How Does Thermage Work?

There’s a whole science behind radiofrequency, but here’s the summary:

  1. When the Thermage device is applied to your skin, it emits controlled heat energy directed toward the deeper layers where collagen is abundant.
  2. This causes the existing collagen fibers to immediately tighten, creating an instant firming effect on your skin.
  3. This process subsequently initiates a natural healing response, promoting the production of new collagen and elastin.

The combination of instant firming and gradual collagen regeneration ensures that your results are effective and have a long-lasting impact.

Thermage treatment results are truly individual and dependent upon each patient’s ability to produce new collagen.

While many patients strengthen their existing collagen and dramatically produce new collagen in response to this radiofrequency therapy, we know that some patients may not make the same collagen in response to the same treatment.

Everyone’s skin is as unique as we all are.

What is Thermage Used For?

Thermage: Before, After (Face)

According to our very own Dr. Ulmer, Thermage skin tightening is used for:

  • The face (improves sagging, wrinkles, lines),
  • Neck (tightens the neck and defines the jawline),
  • Eyelids (reduces laxity, lifts the brows and provides a more open-eye appearance by reducing saggy upper eyelids).

What To Expect Before and After Thermage Treatment?

Before your treatment, here are some tips to get ready:

  • Plan to be at the clinic for approximately 2 –3 hours.
  • Drink plenty of water before, on the day of, and after the procedure for better results.
  • If you’re taking any medications, discuss these during your consultation.

Right after your treatment and for a few days after, you may notice redness and puffiness in the treated area. But no worries, these clear up in no time. Proper skincare will help maintain results, including using a topical Vitamin C antioxidant.

Also, make sure to follow the specific post-treatment instructions provided during your consultation, as these can be tailored to your medical history and age.

Most people come in annually or bi-annually for maintenance, but length of time will vary based on individual factors, such as your skin goals.
