What Are Facial Fillers?

Dermal or facial fillers have many applications. They are used to restore the size and shape of the lips, cheeks, jawline and chin. They fill lines and creases such as the nasolabial folds, perioral lines (‘smoker’s’ lines), ‘marionette’ lines and smile lines. For patients in their 50s or 60s, dermal filler can assist with deflated and sagging skin. Depressed scars, such as acne scars, can also be effectively treated.

As a cosmetic injectable, dermal filler is eased under the skin and then massaged and molded. For the best anti-aging or rejuvenation results, dermal fillers are used in conjunction with botulinum toxin injections (this is also known as a SOFT LIFT™ treatment when it specifically customizes and combines BOTOX COSMETIC® with JUVEDERM® dermal filler).

Types Of Dermal Fillers

The many types of dermal fillers can be confusing for patients. In general, fillers fall into two groups: temporary and semi-permanent. Each has advantages in effectiveness, safety and characteristics. Temporary fillers last an average of at least a year in the majority of people, while semi-permanent fillers can last for years.

There are also several different brands available, which vary in application and structure. Some of the more frequently used facial fillers include:

The dermal fillers that are used in our Vancouver clinic are regarded as the best ones currently available for their respective uses.

Choosing the Right Facial Filler

A critical aspect to consider when researching dermal fillers and doctors is the skill with which the facial filler is injected. It has been said, “It’s not the filler, it’s the filler” – the experience and artistic flair with which the dermal filler is injected determines the ultimate result of the treatment.

At Pacific Dermaesthetics facial fillers are only injected by one of our board-certified dermatologists.

What to Expect

Some sensitive areas of the face may need to be anesthetized. However, most fillers today come pre-mixed with an anesthetic making the experience very comfortable for most people.  Usually one treatment is all that is needed, but for extensive work you should expect to have a few sessions to help achieve optimal results.

Depending on the type of facial filler used, some swelling may be experienced after the treatment and it can last for a few days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does one syringe of dermal filler treat the whole face?

Depending on your age and the degree of volume loss, one syringe may be enough for some younger individuals. However, multiple syringes will be required for increased volume loss. A consultation with one of our doctors will provide you with an estimate for what will be required to achieve the best results for your needs.

How soon will filler take effect?

You will enjoy improvement immediately with the full effect visible in about 7-10 days.

Do I need to arrive with no make-up on?

No, but we will remove your make up in the areas being treated.

Can I go out right after treatment?

Yes, most patients can go out right after their treatment. You may wish to touch up your make-up after treatment to cover minor redness.

Is there any way to prevent bruising prior to a treatment?

Arnica supplements, found in many drugstores, may help prevent bruising.

Also, be sure to avoid:
• Ibuprofen and aspirin one week prior and 2 days after treatment as it may cause thinning of the blood. Use acetaminophen instead.
• Supplements such as Vitamin E, garlic, omega-3, St. John’s Wort that are blood thinners.
• Alcohol 2 days before treatment.

If I bruise after a dermal filler treatment, is there any way to make it resolve quickly?

A vascular laser treatment in the affected area may hasten the clearance of a bruise.

Do fillers feel lumpy?

Not typically. Our goal is for a smooth, natural look and feel. If this does occur, it generally settles over a period of a few days to a few weeks.

Is it permanent?

No, most fillers are slowly and naturally absorbed over time.
